I can't wait for you to get started...
Hi! Welcome to Hand-lettering with Type Affiliated!
My name is Hayley Barry and I am so excited to teach you all the in’s and out’s of hand-lettering!
By the end of this class, you will be what I like to call a “self-reliant lettering artist” meaning that you will have all the tools and the knowledge to confidently go forward to create work that is unique, beautiful, meaningful and well designed. Whether you’re brand new to hand-lettering or excited to learn how to take your work to the next level and develop a unique style, this class is for you!
Over the course of the class, we will be covering topics like letterform structure, weight, height, contrast, serifs, spurs, drop shadows, 3D lettering, flourishes, decorations, kerning, emotion, and more!
The course consists of step by step videos with clear, simple teaching. As part of the course, you will get a downloadable workbook that we will use throughout each of the lessons. Other than the workbook, all you need is a pen or pencil, no fancy expensive tools required!
And that’s not all! When creating this class, it was super important to me that there be a level of accountability built into the lessons. I wanted to be sure that you as a student were receiving the support and feedback that you need to become an awesome lettering artist, which is why at the end of each assignment there will be a place for you to upload your work! At the end of each lesson, you’ll be able to submit your work and get positive, constructive feedback directly from me on how to get even better!
I am so excited for you to join me in this lettering course! Let’s get busy lettering!

What Past Students Are Saying:
“This class was a great introduction to lettering! I loved how clear Hayley was about the most important parts of hand lettering. The shapes of the letters, how to keep things consistent etc. It was just what i needed to give me the basics and start going on my own from there!”
“I loved the clear step by step instruction and how we went though every step of the process and combined it all at the end. She did a great job explaining why each element was important and relevant and how we can use it to make something wonderful.”
“It was a class that was very well presented and so worth my time! I have practiced multiple times a day since the class and felt so much more confident in my lettering! I know what to look for and what makes hand-lettering such a beautiful art form!”
“I loved the clear examples, and how you explained why we were doing what we were doing... I also loved how you said, 'here is the reason, and the purpose' and then you also showed real-life examples of the principles in action.”

I'm Brand New To Lettering. Is This A Good Class For Beginners?
This is a perfect course for beginners! If you’ve never done hand-lettering before or are new to hand-lettering, this course will walk you through everything you need to know to get started! The course is made up of clear step-by-step instruction videos and includes practice assignments to help you learn your new skills.
-
What if I already know some stuff about hand-lettering?
One of the main purposes of this course is to help you develop your unique style as a lettering artist! Even if you’ve been doing lettering for a while, I’m going to show you ways to better understand letters so that you can create letters that are unique to you that will stand out in a saturated market. Instead of just learning how to memorize letter shapes, I’ll be teaching you how to be a self-reliant lettering artist and will give you the tools to stand out and develop a style that is all your own!
-
Will I be able to get answers to my questions?
Yes! Being able to get feedback on your work is SUPER IMPORTANT, that’s why each section of the course will have a place for you to upload your work and to receive feedback and individualized help! As a teacher, I believe that learning is best when students are able to ask questions. Along with having access to practice reviews to help improve your lettering, all students who enroll in the course will be able to email me and leave messages in the community and receive a special class email address to ask questions related to the course.
-
What supplies will I need for the class?
One of the best things about hand-lettering is that it doesn’t require any fancy, expensive tools! When you register for the course, you will be given access to a free, downloadable set of worksheets that go along with the class. Other than the worksheets, all you’ll need is a pencil or pen! If you would like additional supplies (they are not required or necessary,) I would recommend:
- Plain white scratch paper (normal copy paper is great!)
- A black pen - any pen will do, I encourage you to play around with different pens to see what you like best!
- A black marker - any marker works! I just like to keep one on hand to make filling shapes faster. -
What if I do digital lettering work? Can I still take this class?
Yes! During the course, I will be working with pen and pencil on paper, but if you like to draw digitally using Procreate or some other program, you can totally follow along on your iPad or tablet! The worksheets are in PDF format and you can upload them onto your iPad and draw straight on them. The same principles apply when it comes to doing hand-lettering traditionally and digitally, use whichever is more comfortable to you!
-
I’ve taken one of your in-person workshops in the past, does this class cover the same things?
Yes and no. In this course, we cover the same things as we do in my in-person workshop “Intro to Hand-Lettering” but in more detail. Unlike the in-person workshop, the online class has assignments for you to do throughout, and you can re-watch the videos over and over.
If you have taken my in-person “Composition and Design” workshop, then the online class will be all new information for you! -
Does the online course come with your cute workbook?
To make things easier, the online course comes with a series of worksheets that you can print out and draw on directly rather than a workbook. The information is the same, the format is just different and more suited for practice and following along. (And don’t worry, the worksheets are still very cute!)
-
How long does it take to complete the course?
The class is made up of lessons that are between 10-40 minutes. In total, there are nearly four and a half hours of video lessons. You can move through the class as quickly or as slowly as you like, however, I do recommend taking time to practice after each lesson before rushing to the next one to make sure you get the most out of the class.
